The immune system involves the interaction of a series of cells and soluble molecules, whose main function is to eliminate invasive microorganisms that can cause harm to the body. In the body, there are two independent pathways of the immune system that, together, trigger various different elimination mechanisms. The innate immune system, mediated by receptors that recognize unique microbial structures, responds quickly to the threat of invading organisms. This involves an adaptive system, mediated by antigen receptors on lymphocytes, which produces a more sustained response. Only the adaptive immune system retains memory of exposure to each microorganism and ensures that the system is mobilized more quickly in a subsequent infection by the same pathogenic agent.
