Alitirox is a dietary supplement indicated for the symptomatic treatment of hypothyroidism. Curcuma longa is a potent antioxidant with anti-inflammatory action that reduces the concentration of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress through the NfK-Beta pathway, a profile favorable to oxidative risk evidenced in autoimmune thyroid diseases. Thyroid hormones are produced from iodine and the amino acid tyrosine. Kelp algae is a natural food source with a lower iodine concentration, thus contributing to the reduction of the risk of excessive iodine consumption. On the other hand, Kelp algae contains various vitamins, calcium, trace elements, and other nutrients such as fiber that even combats symptoms of constipation in these individuals and promotes the detoxification of toxic compounds (environmental pollutants) that can contribute to the disruption of thyroid metabolism. Zinc, vitamin E, and vitamin A work together to promote the production of thyroid hormones. A deficiency of any of these elements decreases the production of the active hormone. Low concentrations of zinc are common in the elderly, as are cases of hypothyroidism. Zinc, copper, and selenium are necessary co-factors for the enzyme iodothyronine deiodinase to convert T4 to T3. Each form of thyroid hormone requires a distinct trace mineral. Zinc supplementation restores normal thyroid function in patients with hypothyroidism and zinc deficiency, including cases where serum T3 concentration is normal. Selenium deficiency does not decrease the conversion of T4 to T3 in the thyroid or pituitary gland, although it occurs in peripheral cells and tissues. Patients with selenium deficiency show elevated T4 and TSH concentrations, so this trace element reduces concentrations and normalizes thyroid activity. It also reduces anti-thyroid antibodies in cases of autoimmunity and it is described that selenium is deficient in at least 50% of the population. Selenium deficiency induces a decrease in thyroid cell activity even in situations of normal or increased hormonal concentrations. Antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin E, Curcuma longa extracts) enhance thyroid function in animal studies, with a decrease in changes in body weight associated with thyroid function alteration, reduction of T4 and T3 suppression, and attenuation of cholesterol levels. Vitamins B2, B3, and B6 are necessary co-factors for hormonal production and cellular conversion of T4 to T3. The highlighted vitamin B3 reduces serum levels of thyroid hormones while maintaining
