Currently, Spain is a major producer of citrus fruits, especially in the Levante region and some provinces of Andalusia, but what we know today as sweet orange (Citrus x sinensis) is an ancient hybrid called Chinese orange. It is likely that this species originated from Citrus maxima, Citrus reticulata, and Citrus medica, like most of the species we know and consume today.
